Protecting Our Widows and Widowers in Retirement Act
Summary:
• The "POWR Act" amends title II of the Social Security Act to improve benefits for widows and widowers in two-income households, effective for benefits payable after December 2026.
• For eligible fully insured widows/widowers, monthly benefits would equal the greater of the deceased spouse's primary insurance amount OR 75% of the combined sum of the survivor's own old-age/disability benefit and the deceased spouse's primary insurance amount.
• SSI beneficiaries are held harmless, meaning any benefit increase under this bill will not count as income for purposes of determining SSI eligibility or benefit amounts.
