Puerto Rico Energy Opportunity and Geothermal Assessment Act of 2026
Summary:
• Amends the Energy Policy Act of 1992 to require the Secretary of the Interior, through the U.S. Geological Survey and in consultation with the Secretary of Energy, to conduct geothermal assessments for Puerto Rico, including enhanced geothermal systems assessments
• The assessments must include high-resolution maps, evaluations of groundwater vulnerability (with attention to karst terrain and highly transmissive aquifer systems), and assessments of seismic hazards and induced seismicity risks
• The Secretary of the Interior must submit reports to House and Senate committees within 1 year of enactment and biennially thereafter until assessments are complete, covering status, coordination, preliminary results, obstacles, and planned next steps
