Route 66 National Historic Trail Designation Act
Summary:
• Amends the National Trails System Act to designate the Route 66 National Historic Trail, covering approximately 2,400 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, including all alignments of U.S. Highway 66 in existence between 1926 and 1985
• The trail would be administered by the Secretary of the Interior through the National Park Service, with required tribal consultation before activities having substantial direct impacts on Indian Tribes
• Land acquisition for the trail is restricted to willing sellers only and cannot extend more than an average of one-quarter mile on either side of the trail, with eminent domain and condemnation explicitly prohibited
