S. 5045

Wildfire Emissions Prevention Act of 2026

📅 Oct 05, 2026
Summary:
• Amends the Clean Air Act to modify how air quality monitoring data is handled for "exceptional events," explicitly including prescribed fires (including tribal cultural burning) in that definition, and establishes a deemed-approval process if the EPA Administrator does not act on a State petition within one year
• Requires the EPA Administrator to publish proposed regulatory revisions within 270 days and finalize them within 180 days after that, aimed at reducing the burden and cost for States to demonstrate an exceptional event
• Establishes a competitive grant program ("Smoke Ready Communities Program") for eligible entities to address wildfire smoke hazards in community buildings, with a federal cost share of up to 90 percent
