Modernizing Access to Our Public Oceans Act
Summary:
• The "Modernizing Access to Our Public Oceans Act" requires the Secretary of Commerce to develop data standards and make publicly available geographic information system (GIS) data related to fishing restrictions and recreational vessel use of the exclusive economic zone within 4 years of enactment.
• The publicly accessible website must include information on fishing restrictions, areas open or closed to recreational activities, marine protected areas, and navigation/bathymetric data — updated at least twice yearly, with some data updated in real time.
• The bill protects certain information from public disclosure, including historic/archaeological resource details and commercial fishing proprietary information, and explicitly excludes tribal waters and usual or accustomed fishing areas from its scope.
